| The Spindletop soccer club emerged during the late seventies as an alternative to the West End YMCA soccer program which only offered soccer to elementary and middle school children. Several local parents wanted to see soccer grow and expand into the high schools and thus the Spindletop soccer program was born. Through the efforts of Liz and Jerry Sandel, Bob Lippincott, Carlos Garcia, and Deborah and JJ Lovoi, the club commenced its inaugural season in the Spring of 1979 with 523 players from all over the county forming teams from instructional to High School. JJ Lovoi served as the first president. The teams played on makeshift fields with portable goals in front of Forest Park (now Westbrook) High School. By the mid 1980's, the club had expanded to such a degree that it now encompassed several counties and evolved into the parent organization that it is today. In 1995, Rocky Chapman and JJ Lovoi recruited Jorge Cruz to form and train a competitive branch of the club. Spindletop Select was formed to provide the highest level of competition to the most dedicated and talented youth in the area. Comprising both boys and girls teams, Spindletop Select teams compete all over the State in matches and tournaments against the best teams in the region. Divided into three different divisions, Division 1, Super 2, and Division 2, Select teams represent the highest level of competition to local players. The teams are trained from August through May by professional trainers and many of the players go on to Olympic development programs or collegiate play. Tryouts for ages 10 through 18 are held in May and June. Spindletop Select Soccer Club, Inc. (“SSSC”) is a nonprofit, tax exempt entity. The annual tax return of SSSC is available for inspection to the public at the principal office of SSSC at 470 Orleans, Beaumont, Texas 77701, during regular business hours and with reasonable notice.
